What an awesome day!

The show opened with a bang – well, actually with STAN (THE MAN) LEE cutting the ribbon and getting the key to the city AND having Long Beach proclaim October 2, 2009 Stan Lee Day!

We at LBCC can’t thank everyone enough – our exhibitors, vendors, artists, guests, friends, family, publishers, convention staff, Stan and of course – all the fans who came out to play and LOVE COMICS MORE!

Excelsior!

Enjoy the pics … but for your warlord of marketing, perhaps my favorite moment was seeing a guy about my age with a stack of 70s DC and Marvel books, who didn’t wait to read his books – he sat against a pillar and dove into his new purchases. It made my day.

Jeph Loeb and Stan Lee!

If you haven’t gotten tickets yet, there’s still time – and we have a few MORE surprises to pull out of our hats tomorrow and Sunday!

I first met Robot Chicken creators Matt Senreich and Seth Green while I was working at Palisades Toys… they always let me hang around with them in return for some cool toys. Then after Paliades went out of business, I landed at Master Replicas. Not long after, Robot Chicken rolled out its first Robot Chicken: Star Wars episode. I was graciously invited to come and hang out at the premier party at Skywalker Ranch… in return for some FX Lightsabers for the cast and crew. (And, just to shut me up, they even included my picture with the cast on a DVD Easter Egg!)

So, when I signed on to the Long Beach Comic Con, and was asked to interview some of the guests, it was with no small amount of amusement that I emailed the Robot Chicken offices to say: “It’s ME again!” I’m still trying to figure out what I can give them, so that they’ll let me be seen with them at the show. Hmmm…

Anyway, five RC Writers agreed to sit down with me for a quick chat – Kevin Shinick, Tom Root, Doug Goldstein, Hugh Stervakov and Mike Fasolo. (Seth & Matt were conspicuously “unavailable”; I should have brought gifts!) But in all seriousness these are some really funny guys, with a lot of talent and passion for what they do. Check it out below:

TRAVIS: Thanks guys, first of all, for taking part in the inaugural Long Beach Comic Con. What made Robot Chicken want to be a part of the show?

TOM: Anything for a paycheck! Assuming there’s a paycheck. There probably isn’t a paycheck, now that I think about it.

HUGH: I was just hoping for a catering table. Like, water and cookies?

MIKE: We’re media whores. If there’s a venue that will put our names in big, bold letters we’re all over it.

DOUG: I really want there to be a great con in Los Angeles. I mean, San Diego Comic Con is nice but it’s a two hour drive and I usually hate leaving my house. So anything we can do to make Long Beach big and awesome, we’re there, since we are big and awesome.

KEVIN: It’s close to my house.

TRAVIS: How did each of you become involved with Robot Chicken?

TOM: Matt Senreich and Seth Green fell in love back in 1998 or 1999, and when they wanted to make a short animated film, I was one of the writers they asked to help them out. Long story short, three Emmy nominations.

HUGH: Seth created this show and asked me to buy the toys. I was busy with a couple other jobs that were better than buying toys, but Seth is a friend so I did him a favor. I’ve only got one Emmy nomination, but I’m a little better-looking than Tom, so it all evens out. Plus, the toy buyer gets all the chicks.

MIKE: Matt and I made a bet back in the late 90’s where whoever lost had to sell a TV show and hire the other. Matt lost and so I got a job at Robot Chicken. Pretty sweet, huh?

DOUG: Most of us used to work for Wizard and ToyFare magazines like a long time ago, and then Matt called Seth ‘cause he heard Seth loved toys and it turned out Seth loved ToyFare. So we all became friends and decided to make a TV show. Our first attempt, “Toys and Porn and Chickens” didn’t work out.

KEVIN: I was their one thousandth interviewee. So it was either give me a job or buy me a car.

TRAVIS: You guys all write for the show, but most of you have other responsibilities, as well. I think Kevin, you’ve done some voice-work, and Doug and Tom have both directed and produced episodes, too. How does that work – do you just draw names out of a hat, like some families do for chores?

TOM: When you’re creatively involved on a show like this, your job can’t just end when you hand in the script. We’re always trying to think of ways to make the show better, and that means working on it in all sorts of various capacities.

HUGH: Wait—drawing names out of a hat, has anyone thought of that? That makes a lot of damn sense! Maybe we could actually WIN an Emmy with that strategy!

MIKE: What Tom said.

DOUG: None of us actually know how to make a TV show, so when people start screaming that something’s gotta get done, whichever one of us is closest tries to do it. That’s why I avoid going to the bathroom at work – I don’t want to have to clean it.

KEVIN: To be honest, I think I swindled my way into my first RC voice over part. I wrote a “Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego?” sketch, which was a show I use to have on PBS. So when it came time to record, the choices to play me were limited. Then Mike and I became Co-Creative Directors because we share a kidney.

TRAVIS: Obviously you guys love toys. Do any of you still collect toys, and if so, what? Any prized possessions or favorite items, whether it’s something new or something you’ve had from childhood?

TOM: I’ve got the four Mego Teen Titans from the 1970s up on my shelf at home. They were always my favorite Megos, but my old ones are beat to crap, and I never had Kid Flash. When Seth [Green] found out, he started buying them for me as birthday gifts.

HUGH: I have a 10’ x 10’ storage unit full of toys, and I’ve decided it’s my 8 month-old daughter’s problem to deal with it. I share the unit with Seth, but my crap is sadly encroaching upon his more and more every year. One day I’ll go in there and it will have eaten all his stuff.

MIKE: Many many moons ago I had a pretty big collection of the Micronauts. I’m sure they’re somewhere back at my parents house shoved in a corner somewhere.

DOUG: I still have all the Transformers I had as a kid. Metroplex, Swoop, Thundercracker… I’ve even got the original G1 Soudwave. Mmmm…. Soundwave… so sexy…

KEVIN: My childhood home still has all the toys I grew up with and I’m amazed at how many Star Wars rip-offs I owned. Toys like Star Worlds, Star Raiders, or my favorite, S.T.A.R. Team, which were blatant knock-offs of Vader, Threepio and R2. Now I have faux love for them all.

TRAVIS: What’s your favorite Robot Chicken skit that you wrote or co-wrote?

TOM: Lately it’s the Harry Potter sketch where Criss Angel is a substitute teacher at Hogwarts. It turns completely insane at the end.

HUGH: It didn’t make it to air. Sucks to be me. And yet, tons of people who work on the show quote it to me. My genius is doomed. Everybody get away from me, I’m a black hole of failure.

MIKE: My favorite skit is one that never made it into the show, either. It was where Darth Vader enlisted Encyclopedia Brown’s help to find Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon. It may have been the best skit ever written but everyone was so jealous of how great it was that they rejected it.

DOUG: The little sketch where a mouse ran in wearing a dynamite vest and killed a bunch of cats in a suicide bombing. I love it. My therapist loves that I love it.

KEVIN: My usual answer is the 300 spoof I wrote called 1776. But recently I’ve found a soft spot for “Thursday the 12th.” the sketch where Jason is getting ready for Friday the 13th.

TRAVIS: Okay, share the love – what’s your favorite Robot Chicken skit written by one of the other guys in this interview?

TOM: I like Mike Fasolo’s retelling of Jesus’s birth in the manger. It’s two solid minutes of farting followed by an explosion. And it makes Mike’s parents disappointed in him, which is an added bonus.

HUGH: I don’t even really know why, but I loved Doug Goldstein’s sketch where King Kong overhears his imprisoners talk about how stupid he is, and then takes their advice to climb over the fence. Probably because nobody farts or humps anything. Y’know, I’m a classy guy.

MIKE: My favorite is the Star Trek Opera that was written by Kevin Shinick. It’s a great idea, got great music and real opera singers. It needs to be made into a full length opera and put on Broadway.

DOUG: Tom wrote a sketch where Inspector Gadget used spare parts from Cyberdyne and acted like a Terminator. Genius. Pure f***ing genius. Tom is a pure, f***ing genius.

KEVIN: I think I was in tears when I first read Tom’s Iron Man sketch where the loud noise of his iron uniform screeching through the metal air ducts gives him away.

TRAVIS: Is there anything off limits for Robot Chicken? Anything you guys won’t parody or lampoon? Or have there ever been instances where the network said “no” to an idea for a sketch?

TOM: At this point there’s probably no subject we won’t touch. It’s just a matter of how. And after four seasons we know how the network’s going to react to things, so we don’t submit anything they’ll outright refuse to air.

MIKE: We’ll write anything that comes to mind, no matter how ridiculous or taboo or mean. From there it got so the network and the lawyers and they have the final say.

DOUG: No. I wrote a short bit about a stillborn baby once. It got to animatic and was cut for time. So… no.

KEVIN: Has Robot Chicken said things are off limits? No. Has my wife said things are off limits? Yes. In fact, she didn’t speak to me for a while after I “desecrated” Dr. Seuss and Charlie Brown.

TRAVIS: I love the Star Wars episodes – how involved was Lucasfilm in making the episodes? Are we going to see a Star Wars Robot Chicken: Episode III?

TOM: We made our Star Wars episodes with Lucasfilm’s full blessing, but their involvement in content was very limited. And yes, we’ll be making a third Star Wars episode. Adult Swim announced it on a bump several months back, so I guess it’s happening!

MIKE: All the skits we write are seen by Lucasfilm and they have final say but they pretty much let us do what we want. And yes, there will be an Episode III.

DOUG: Once a year or so George Lucas flies down to LA and begs us to take some of his money. It’s kind of annoying at this point – we say yes just to make him go away.

KEVIN: They were great. They let us go nuts and usually only had minor notes. And yes, we are currently working on a third (possibly feature length) Star Wars special.

TRAVIS: Titan Maximum is debuting soon, and preliminary buzz has been great! (Editors Note: The show actually HAS debuted now… sorry it took me so long to post!) What do you want to say about the show?

TOM: I think Robot Chicken fans will like Titan Maximum. It’s the same vibe, just with recurring characters and awesome robots and lasers. If viewers will simply watch every episode of the first season multiple times, and maybe buy some merchandise, I’m certain the show will grow on them eventually. That’s all I ask.

HUGH: I’m against the show because I don’t have to buy any toys for it. But, having seen some of the episodes, I can say it’s the best damn show I’ve ever been against.

MIKE: It’s a giant robot controlled by a dysfunctional team of kids who you wouldn’t want mowing your lawn and yet they’re the ones in charge of saving the universe. How can you go wrong?

DOUG: Titan Maximum? I’m not familiar with it.

KEVIN: Watch the F**k out of it!

TRAVIS: Did you guys get out and skate at the Robot Chicken on Wheels Tour? I was at the Philly stop, and the only writer I saw was Kevin!

TOM: I was at the San Diego, Los Angeles and Las Vegas skate parties, and I did not skate. That was a whole lot of not skating, let me tell you.

HUGH: I was at the LA show, and I can’t skate because of the friction rule. I refuse to attach anything to my body that eliminates friction. Look, I can barely walk straight on a flat floor that’s not moving. You can’t ask too much of me, even for my art.

MIKE: I was only at the LA one and by the time I got there they’d run out of skates so I couldn’t. But if I had it would have been a sight to see. My skating skills were the inspiration behind all those awesome 80’s skating movies.

DOUG: I did the first third of the tour so I could say I slept on a big tour bus. Pretty comfortable actually. Though being woken up by the sound of the bus going over the rumble strips is not cool.

KEVIN: Yes! I have photos, stories and two bruised kneecaps to prove it. Illegitimate children still pending.

TRAVIS: Since Matt & Seth aren’t here, anything you want to share about them?

TOM: Matt’s middle name starts with an “I.” Isn’t that weird? And Seth’s real name is Samuel Greeley. Look it up.

HUGH: Really? What is Matt’s middle name? Is it Irwin? AND CAN WE CALL HIM FLETCH?? Dammit, I’m so jealous of Matt now. And Seth? In person he’s 6’ 5”. It’s all a ruse. And now I’ve given it up.

MIKE: They are both good, honest, fair, hard workers who I am honored to know and call my friends. Think that will get me a raise?

DOUG: Seth and Matt aren’t here? Then I’m going home! Later, suckers!

KEVIN: You will never see them in the same room together.

TRAVIS: Finally Doug, since Breckin’s not around… want to set the record straight on the “Aluminum Falcon” skit?

TOM: He does.

HUGH: Oh man, I can’t wait for this.

MIKE: One day, far in the future, someone is going to write a Da Vinci Code-like book about uncovering the truth of this skit. I just hope the book will be more thrilling than what actually happened.

KEVIN: On behalf of Breckin, I think it’s only fair for me to say, “Doug, you’re a liar!” And I’m saying that without having heard Doug’s response.

DOUG: (Sighs) Look. I conceptualized the sketch, pitched the sketch, and I wrote the sketch. Brecken touched up the dialogue a little. Before that, he’d never even seen the Star Wars films. Oh, he’d seen every episode of “Droids” and has “The Ewok Adventure” on tape, but that was it. When we sat him down and told him what the whole Saga was about, he really fell in love with the Jar Jar character. So we just gave him a juice box and told him to sit in the corner for the whole writing cycle. And that’s the truth.

Burbank, CA, August 19, 2009 – Prepare to scream and laugh this October 6th as Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat arrives on Blu-ray and DVD in time for Halloween.

From producer Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie, Superman Returns) and writer/director Michael Dougherty (Superman Returns, X2), Trick r Treat is a creepy, darkly comic celebration of the scariest night of the year: Halloween. The film’s ensemble cast includes Academy Award winner Anna Paquin (The Piano, HBO’s True Blood), Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity, X2), Leslie Bibb (Iron Man, Talladega Nights), Dylan Baker (Spiderman 2, Spiderman 3) and Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica [TV Show]).

In the tradition of Creepshow and Tales from the Crypt comes five interwoven tales set on Halloween night: a suburban couple learns the consequences of blowing out a jack-o-lantern before midnight, a high school principal moonlights as a vicious serial killer, a young virgin whose quest for that someone special takes a gruesome turn, a group of teens carry out a cruel prank with disastrous consequences, and a cantankerous old man battles a mischievous trick-or-treating demon.

If you’ve ever been to a convention, there’s a good chance you’ve had a run-in or two with a group known as the 501st Legion… even if you didn’t know that they were called that! The 501st Legion is an all volunteer Star Wars costuming organization that celebrates the Star Wars Universe at various events, ranging from conventions and media events to local community and charity events. Founded in 1997, the 501st Legion has grown from a small group of devoted fans to a world-wide organization with over 5,000 members in “Garrisons” setup in over 20 countries across the globe. In other words, they’re the guys you see in Stormtrooper armor, or dressed like Boba Fett or Darth Vader. (Yeah, they’re exclusively bad guys… because, let’s face it, the bad guys are much, much cooler!) Butthere’s a lot more to the 501st than just dressing up in authentically detailed Star Wars costumes; in the event that you’ve never visited their website, check it out: http://www.501st.com/.

You’ll see that not only are they organized – meticulously so, keeping track of every single member and their rank, worldwide – they are a very socially conscious group. From the website:

“While the 501st was initially founded to unite costumers with a penchant for Star Wars villainy, one of our real-world missions is to bring good to our communities through volunteer charity work. The 501st is always looking for opportunities to brighten the lives of the less fortunate and to bring awareness to positive causes on both a local and global scale.”

Over the years, the 501st Legion has helped to support such worthy charities as The Make a Wish Foundation, City of Hope, Ability First, The American Red Cross, The international Child Abuse Network, The American Cancer Society, Toys for Tots. (For a full list, visit the website!) Additionally, they have given their time to dress up and visit Local Children’s Hospitals and other Facilities to help bring a bit of joy to those in need. In early in 2009, the Legion created the position of Charity Representative and assigned persons in each Garrison or Outpost to take on the responsibility of helping their garrison give back to thecommunity. Additionally, they created “Charity Challenges,” wherein each Garrison competes in challenges, to see who can raise the largest amount of donated goods.

The Southern California Garrison, the chapter of the 501st Legion local to Long Beach, has really risen to the occasion with their “Charity Challenge” participation. From June to August of 2009 the Southern California Garrison held a canned food drive and raised over 2,750 cans of food at various events, one of which benefited the Long Beach Rescue Mission. And on October 1st, they are embarking on a new challenge: A holiday Toy Drive, which will run through December 25th, and will benefit the local chapter of Toys for Tots. And they’re going to be out in full force at the Long Beach Comic Con, looking for donations!

So, here’s the deal… we LOVE the 501st, and we LOVE that they are so socially conscious. Because let’s face it, they don’t have to be. This is a great example of a group of people with a common interest, taking something that they love, and turning into something that is bigger, and more important than any one individual’s love of a Sci Fi movie. They go out of their way and give back to the community, and spread joy while doing something that the love… And that is remarkable. We need more groups like the 501st Legion. Truly.

So, let’s get out there and support these guys… and more importantly, let’s help them support children in need this holiday season. There are no limitations on the donations of toys that they will accept – any toy will do, so long as it’s brand new and in its original package. So while you’re out shopping in the last week and a half leading up to the show, pick up a toy for the 501st Legion’s Toy Drive, and bring it with you to the show. All you have to do is stop by Booth # 401 to drop it off. Or, if you have something that is new and still-wrapped at home, that will do, too. You don’t have to spend a dime. Just bring it to the show. Give it to the kids. Feel good about yourself for a while.

And if you’re not sure this is something you want to be a part of, think of it this way: Darth Vader is asking for donations. You don’t want to make that guy mad.

You’ve seen some cool interviews & unique content involving many of our guest creators and celebrities here on the LBCC Blog (with more coming soon, we promise!) But we’ve got a NEW first today. We’re going to the beach to enjoy the last few days of summer, and so we’re turning the blog over to one of our esteemed guests, Mr. Dan Wickline. Seriously, there’s a pitcher of margaritas with our name on it. So, enjoy Dan’s insightful and irreverent look at the convention — and take his advice to heart. The man knows what he’s talking about. Here’s Dan…

MAKE IT AN EVENT

I’ve been doing conventions for a long time now. Anywhere I can drive to in a 24 hour period, I have. Comic-con International, Wondercon, Ape-con, Wizard Los Angeles, Wizard Texas, Emerald City Con, Phoenix Cactus Con, the Extrosion in Las Vegas (what a pile of crap that was) and even a few put together locally by store owners or magazines. And I’ve seen a lot of interesting things that fans have come up with. There is a guy from Phoenix who makes custom Lego figures that look like different comic book characters. Another guy in Dallas that is having artists re-do the old Marvel Action Stamps. And there is a lovely young lady her in Southern California who has a sketch book where anything goes as long as there is a flower somewhere on the page.

Now these ideas are pretty clever to me… and I realized I had some ideas of my own that I’ve decided to share. Maybe one or two of the enterprising fans attending the first annual Long Beach Comic Con might want to try these in an attempt to make their weekend more of an event.

AUTOGRAPH COLLECTORS
Are you an autograph collector? How about doing something to make your particular autograph unique and tied to the event? Go through the list of guests and figure out which autographs you want… Tom Jane, Jim Lee, Frank Cho, Dan Wickline… you get the idea. So once you’ve compiled your list, then go on-line and find photos of each of your chosen targets. Copy the photo from the web page and using Photoshop or some similar program, make your own trading card for that creator. Their picture on the front with a place to sign and on the back… maybe you put a piece of art if they’re an artist, or some quotes if they’re a writer. Also put the event on one side: Long Beach Comic Con 2009, and maybe include your name on the back… creators love it when they know the object they are signing isn’t going straight to eBay. Then print these up on the thickest cardstock you can find and presto… instant collectible. Imagine the look on Tim Bradstreet’s face when he sees his own face.

SKETCH COLLECTORS:
If you are sketch collector, use the same basic idea except just put the information about the artist on the back, again the event Long Beach Comic Con 2009 and a tiny picture of them is always nice. Then they can sketch on the front. And how much better will your sketches be when the artist realizes that you put in more effort than just walking into Borders and buying a $5.99 sketchbook. Tone Rodriguez will most likely feel so special at seeing this card made just for him, that he might just color the sketch.

PHOTO COLLECTORS
Are you a photo collector? Besides being a world-renown writer (anyone buying that?) I’m also a published photographer… so cameras and photos are a specialty of mine. Everyone runs around with a digital camera these days, stopping to take pictures of every TV star, comic creator and costumed woman. I’m fairly certain some don’t even bother with the TV stars or comic creators. I saw one guy with a shirt that said “Face or Butt, it’s your choice, either way I’m still clicking.” So you want to do something unique and collectible… find an old Polaroid camera with the instant film (don’t ask me from where). Then take that around shooting pics. Not only will the hot women stop to pose, there is that automatic “I have to wait and see how it comes out” thing that goes with it. So you get the extra minute of the cute girl leaning against you as the two of you wait for things to develop. For extra points ask them to sign the white stripe at the bottom. You can also take photos of the TV stars and comic creators this way… that’s your call.

COMIC COLLECTORS
Now if your thing is to get comic books signed… you probably have a lot of books to carry with you, but there is a “no dollies on the floor” policy. I have a simple solution – Service Animals. No one can say no to a service animal… Seeing Eye dogs, dogs that help the handicapped, etc. I want to see an attendee try to pull off claiming a donkey as a service animal. You can fudge the paper work, who is going to take the time to check? Just load up the saddle bags with all your books and let the beast of burden do his thing. Put him in a Batman cape and cowl to add to the festivities. I know I would be pleasantly surprised to look up and see my next fan is a boy and his burro. And think of how many times you would get to say “Oh, pardon my ass.”

COSTUME/COS-PLAY FANS
Now for the costume/cos-play fans; you’ve already made yourself up like your favorite character so there isn’t a whole lot I can do here for extra creativity. Unless… unless there is that one exhibitionist woman who dresses up to be looked at. Now this one might get me in trouble with the Long Beach Comic Con management… but if you really want to show off the goods… and I am SO not saying that this what all costume people want… only IF this is your thing… then make a magic view box that is attached to the front of your shirt, it sticks out about a foot and has a pair of goggles to look into it. So everyone else sees the box and only the special few (age appropriate) who crouch down and look through the goggles in the front get to see anything extra… Now I’m not suggesting any level of nudity here… this is a family show… but some well placed pasties, etc could make it all fun. And hell, put a slot on it for dollars so people can donate to the Hero Initiative after looking. (This idea is in no way associated with the Hero Initiative which is a fine and up standing charity that benefits a very worthy cause.)

UP-AND-COMING CREATORS

The final type of person I want to address here are the “up and coming” creators. They go to cons with their portfolios in hand, samples to give out and a glimmer of hope in their eye. Often times those are the same people at the end of the con who have their portfolios thrown into the back seat, their sample packages flung out the window and the glimmer in their eye , transformed into a spark of insanity… for every one guy that gets a job at a convention there are a hundred going home without. So you have to do something to stand out… where is the guy with his portfolio on a sandwich board with the line “Hire Joe”? Where is the guy who puts his sample pack on top of a pepperoni pizza and has it delivered to the Aspen booth? Where is the writer who has his entire script written out with sharpie on the body of a beautiful bikini-clad woman and takes her to the Top Cow booth to meet Filip Sablik? (If this one happens, you owe me Filip.) Every creator has a different story on how they got into the industry, how they got someone to take notice of them. Maybe it’s time to get creative in how you present yourself.

The bottom line here is simple: yes, we are the comic creators but that doesn’t make us the only creative people at the show. We have to be at our tables for the show to exist… but you have to be on the other side of those tables as well, or none of it works. So make it more than just a trip to Long Beach. Make it an event. Do something extra special. Be creative and make your con experience something to really remember. And if you do get creative… come by my booth and let me see what you came up with…. Especially if that magic box thing happens… I’ve got singles…

I recently had the opportunity for a nice little question and answer session with Long Beach Comic Con guest, Berkeley Breathed. If you were alive during the 1980s, and weren’t living under a rock of some kind, you are almost certainly familiar with Mr. Breathed’s work – particular his iconic character Opus the penguin and the rest of the cast of the brilliant, satirical Bloom County comic. I was thrilled for the opportunity, and needless to say, he did not disappoint. Read on:

Travis Allen: First of all, we’re thrilled that you’re going to join us in Long Beach. Have you done a lot of these kinds of shows?

Berkeley Breathed: Never. Been waiting for an invite for 31 years. It’s about time.

Travis: Wow, never? Well, we’re sincerely honored to be your first – and hopefully we’ll show you a good enough time, that it won’t be your last!

So, there were 3 comic strips that were instrumental in shaping my personality during my formative years – The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, and Bloom County. I already have the big, complete editions of the first two… and now I hear that a “complete” Bloom County is coming. First of all, is this true? And if so, when can I get my grubby hands on it?

Berkeley: In about five weeks. Every embarrassing Bloom County panel, no matter how lamely drawn while I was intoxicated or sleeping it off… It will be in the five volumes. God help me.

Travis: No that’s great – just in time for the holidays! Cannot wait for that! [Editor's note: even though "street date for The Bloom County Library, Volume One is October, 6, it will be available for sale in advance exclusively at the Long Beach Comic Con!!]

So, following the final Bloom County strip in 1989, you brought back Opus (and Bill the Cat!) back, not once but twice – first in Outland, and then again with Opus. What is it about these characters that kept you coming back? Was it for you, or for the fans, or some combination of the two?

Berkeley: Ever try to lose a girlfriend that you knew was bad for you or keeping you from other things or costing you way too much but the sex was too good to let go? Of course you have. Exactly like that.

Travis: (Laughs) Well, that’s relatable. I love what you did with the final Opus strip last year – making readers follow an on-line link to see the final panel. It was very innovative! Was the inclusion of Good Night Moon in that final panel, a nod to the fact that you have been spending your time focusing more on writing children’s books?

Berkeley: You got me. My bridge to where my heart creatively lies at the moment: with stories, not satire.

Travis: Okay, that’s a nice segue – speaking of your books, I had heard that your Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big was being adapted into a short film by Disney. A

nd then I never heard anything about that again? Was the film made, and if so, why have we not seen it released commercially?

Berkeley: It was only partially completed, a blight on my career and for the entire animation world. The worst year of my life, making those 8

minutes of film. I was not born to direct animators… and the company hired to execute the job should never have been born at all. Why did you bring this up?

Travis: Um, let’s pretend I didn’t. Soooo, moving on… the film version of Mars Needs Moms! is in post-production there as well (starring Joan Cusack and fellow Long Beach Comic Con guest, Seth Green). This is a motion capture film, correct? How much have you been involved in the film, and what are your thoughts on the motion capture technology versus traditional animation?

Berkeley: I will be happy to discuss this at the convention!

Travis: That’s great; don’t want to spoil everything before the show!

How about this then… a lot of people might not realize that you did the art-work for the fictional comic strip Walter and Jasmine in the film Secondhand Lions (starring Haley Joel Osmet, Robert Duvall, & Michael Caine). How did you become involved in that project?

Berkeley: The director is an old Bloom County fan, and based much of his ideas for the movie on my work. So he asked if I wouldn’t draw the fake strip. For free, essentially. Tim, you owe me, dude. But the movie was great fun and a delight.

Travis: What are you currently working on, and what does the future hold for you?

Berkeley: More stories. More novels. More movies. Same as everyone.

Travis: Berkeley, thank you so much for your time – it’s been a real honor. We’re all looking forward to meeting you in Long Beach in October.

Berkeley: Thank you!

So there you have it – Long Beach Comic Con will be Berkeley Breathed’s VERY FIRST convention after an amazing 30+ year career. That is truly, truly special… and just one more reason to make sure you find yourself in Long Beach this October!

Jane Hosting Premiere Screening Of His Latest Film “Give ‘Em Hell Malone”

Bloom County Creator, Berkeley Breathed Making First Ever Convention Guest Appearance

Baltimore, MD September 8, 2009 – Long Beach Comic Con is proud to announce two special additions to its already formidable lineup of stars making appearances, Thomas Jane, the lead actor on HBO’s latest hit Hung as well as the star of The Punisher and Berkeley Breathed, the legendary creator of Bloom County, one of the most popular comic strip series of all time. The inaugural Long Beach Comic Con is October 2-4 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California.

Jane will host the premiere screening of his latest film Give’Em Hell Malone, an action flick starring co-starring Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible, Surrogates, Pulp Fiction). The feature is the story of a tough as nails private eye squaring off against the mob. Breathed, making his first ever convention appearance as a convention guest, will be introducing The Bloom County Library Volume One, the first chronological collection of the first two years of Bloom County comic strips in their entirety. Breathed will be hosting a discussion of Bloom County and signing copies of the book on Saturday only.

In addition to the Give‘Em Hell Malone premiere, Jane and his Raw Entertainment partner, Tim Bradstreet, will be on hand to promote their new comic properties Bad Planet and Alien Pig Farm. Bad Planet, a twelve issue mini-series that ended it’s first arc late last year, tells the story of a mysterious freighter that crashes to earth, unleashing horrible creeping alien spiders, and unlocking a hideous intergalactic secret. The first six issues have been collected as a limited edition black and white hard cover, available exclusively through LBCC. Alien Pig Farm, a completed four issue mini-series, set in Horton County, Kentucky, is about moonshine running brothers Johnny, Ray, and Elvis who run afoul of the law and encounter a spaceship full of pig eating aliens. The Trade Paper Back will also be exclusive to the Con at this time.

In making his first ever comic convention guest appearance, Breathed will be supporting IDW Publishing’s release of the first archival collection of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Bloom County. The Bloom County Library Volume One contains a series of “Context Pages” sprinkled throughout the volumes, providing perspective for the reader and presenting a variety of real-life events and personalities that were contemporary at the time of original publication. Breathed has also added his own commentary at points throughout the book.

Bloom County is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed newspaper strips of modern times. Created by Breathed, the strip premiered on December 8th, 1980 and featured the beloved and quirky denizens of Bloom County including Opus, Steve Dallas, Bill the Cat, Milo Bloom, Michael Binkley, and Cutter John. The strip was published in over 1,200 newspapers. The street date for the book is October 6, however, convention attendees will get chance to own it before anyone else.

“When we envisioned our inaugural Long Beach Comic Convention we saw an event that was going to be a crowd pleasing event for fans of all things pop culture. With Thomas Jane and an iconic creator like Berkeley Breathed, we continue to build on our vision for the show,” said event planner Martha Donato, President of MAD Event Management. “Having these popular, talented artists at our show, lets fans know that Long Beach Comic Con is here to stay.”

We continue our series of conversations with exhibitors & guests of the Long Beach Comic Con with Eddie Deighton & Ben Shahrabani of Com.X.

Eddie, Ben, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to chat with us. It’s great to see Com.X back in action so let’s jump right in and see what’s what. The Cla$$war hardcover is thing of beauty. A complete package of both content and design. That said, most people will recognize Com.X based on that property alone but you guys have a host of other great projects. Can you tell me what’s going on over at Com.X right now?

ED: Well, we’re very busy putting the final editing touches on our next project, ‘45′, created by Andi Ewington, and we’ve just reformatted the collected edition of Cla$$war for the softcover version. Both titles will be solicited in the October edition of Previews and will be available this December (2009). On top of that, we are preparing at least three new projects for announcement at Long Beach – the new artwork is looking great and, as usual with our books, the projects are highly original and unique. We’re stoked – can’t wait to show you!

BMS: Well, right now I am working 24/7 (OK, that might be an overstatement) on promoting Cla$$war and Razorjack which came out a couple of months ago. We’re still getting some really good write-ups on the internet and in print press which we’re really pleased about, and of course I’m putting the word out there about “45” which it seems is piquing everyone’s interest. When I’m not doing that I’m reading scripts, and of course, last but not least, prepping for LBCC!!!

With LBCC less than two months away what does Com.X have planned to show off and promote those projects?

BMS: I think there is still a lot of excitement about the books we just released, Cla$$war and Razorjack, so we’ll continue to promote these at LBCC, but speaking of new and shiny things we also have at least two very exciting projects we’re eager to show off. Firstly, we have “45” by Andi Ewington, and we’re so, so excited about this one. Not only is the story amazing, but it’s unique in the fact that it features the work of 45 separate comic artists. I think the buzz will be high on that one. It’s not something that’s been done before.

ED: We’re busy putting the final touches to the booth layout and deciding what books and promos we’re bringing along. We have recently signed two more projects, which we’re hoping we can pull some artwork together on. We will certainly be announcing the new books at LBCC, but we’re hoping we’ll have some cool art to back them up. Also, we’ll have stock of our current titles, so anybody interested in checking out our books who hasn’t been able to find them will be able to pick them up at the show.

Speaking about LBCC specifically, what helped you decide to come out and set up all the way out in California, half a world away from home base in London, England?

BMS: Well, I’m based in Los Angeles, so it wasn’t a huge jump for me to be at LBCC…but it wouldn’t have been the same without my colleagues in London attending, so I’m glad they’ve chosen to commit to come out for this. Since we didn’t get space at SDCC (which was a disappointment not to be there), we also didn’t want there to be a huge gap between the last show we exhibited at (Bristol CC in May), and the next, and the new LBCC presents a perfect opportunity. It also seems to be more intimate, more focused on the comics than the other, broader aspects of the entertainment business.

ED: Since we had relaunched the company at the beginning of this year, we agreed that we should attend a few conventions in both the UK and US. Long Beach coincided perfectly with our plans to hit the convention circuit again. It’s been a long time since Com.X ‘represented’ and we’re really excited to be back in California. The West Coast attendees have always been awesome to us, so it’s great to be back after what must be six years away from the circuit.

From both a company and a personal point of view, what are you most looking forward to about LBCC?

BMS: I know I’m looking forward to interacting with the fans. Sometimes it can be isolating working behind the scenes, but at a show you get to talk to all sorts of people about the books. I think that’s part of the fun of co-running a publishing company.

ED: I’m looking forward to seeing some familiar faces – both readers and artists – and showing people what we’ve been up to and what we’re working on now. We’re hoping to be able to attend a couple of panels as well. Next year is shaping up very well for us in terms of our publishing plans and we’re looking forward to gauging reaction from the fans. What with Long Beach being a new show, we’re seeing some major enthusiasm from the organisers, so we’re excited to see the results of all the hard work. Oh – and being a Brit – I’m looking forward to a little West Coast Sun!

I’d just like thank you guys again for taking the time to sit and chat and we’re looking forward to what you have to show us at LBCC come October 2nd!

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with with writer Jeph Loeb, who is not only a super-star in the world of comics (and waaay beyond), but also a helluva nice guy, too. Check out the invterview below…

TRAVIS ALLEN: Hi Jeph, thanks for taking the time to talk with us today. And, of course, thanks for taking part in the inaugural Long Beach Comic Con. What made you want to be a part of the show? And why do you think Souther California attracts so much Comic talent?

JEPH LOEB: I was so honored to be asked. I knew Martha and Phil from the old days. Martha in particular has been so good to my family and that wins my heart hands down. The Chicago Con in 2006 was when we auctioned off the artwork from Superman/Batman #26 for my son Sam’s charity. It couldn’t have happened without Martha. So when she called, I came running. I would do a show on the moon for her — but Long Beach being 40 minutes from where I live helped!

Why So Cal? I dunno. The weather? I came out for the movie business so what do I know? (laughs) What amazes me is the talent that’s up in Portland. Bendis, Rucca, Fraction, Busiek and I’m sure a dozen more I’m not remembering. Must be something in the water up there.

TRAVIS: You mention Hollywood … let’s talk a little bit about that aspect of your work. The first two films that you wrote, both released in 1985, were Teen Wolf, starring Michael J. Fox, and Commando, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Talk about range! How does one switch gears emotionally, from writing about a teenage werewolf, to a bad-ass vengeful father?

JEPH: Oddly enough they were really about the same thing. At least in my muddy head. I’ve always been interested in the duality of man. With Teen Wolf it was clear — the teen and the wolf.

In Commando, it was about the father and the soldier. You can see why I’ve spent so much time with Clark/Superman, Bruce/Batman, Peter/Spidey and Banner/Hulk!

TRAVIS: Wow, I see Teen Wolf in a whole new light now… (Laughs) So, you also served as a writer/producer on the children’s series Seven Little Monsters from 2000 to 2003, along with creator famed children’s author, Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are). How involved was Sendak in the show? And how does writing for a children’s series differ from most of your other work?

JEPH: You’ve really done your homework!

TRAVIS: I try! (Laughs) And I try not to ask the same questions you’ve probably heard a billion times.

JEPH: Well, Sendak was involved — his business partner John Carls is the one I dealt with day-to-day. John taught me so much about animation — not just children’s animation. Sendak lives in the east, so it was over the phone. He’s brilliantly funny. The big thing I had to learn was in children’s animation there’s something called the “E.O.” of every story — the “educational objective”. So you’re not just writing a script, you’re teaching a lesson as well.

TRAVIS: Huh, I can imagine that adds a whole new… dimension to how you have to think about a story. Oh, and speaking of story… You’ve written and/or produced episodes of three of the most important genre shows of the last decade – Smallville, LOST, and HEROES. I’m not going to tell us which one you enjoyed working on the most, but can you tell us a little bit about how the experiences differed from one another?

JEPH: They were all great experiences, all very different. I have no favorite. Smallville was the first show I went on that I wasn’t the creator — I’d done pilots for series that didn’t happen — or like with Seven Monsters or Buffy Animated, I wrote the pilot and then ran the show. In these other cases, I came into someone else’s show — and in Smallville and Lost they were during season two (and as I’ve said elsewhere, all the hard work had already been done! (laughs). With HEROES it was very much from the creation of the pilot and then into the series.

I’m still very close with folks from all those shows — a writers’ room is very much a family and you’re working on this giant baby called the show. What’s amazing about television is that it is always on the go. Once the season starts, it’s like a runaway train. You HAVE to have something on Monday nights at nine or the network has dead air.

So, unlike movies, you start writing and in about three weeks you’re shooting it. Both on Buffy and Heroes I was lucky that the stages were about 90 feet away so I could see the production any time I wanted. Smallville shoots in Vancouver and LOST is in Hawaii. On Heroes I was much more involved in the production side of things for this reason. I actually like that part of filmmaking as much as writing.

TRAVIS: Okay, I have to ask this… Speaking of LOST… um, can you tell us what the smoke monster is? I won’t tell anyone…

JEPH: That’s what so brilliant about the show. Damon has created this amazing mystery filled with character drama that will pay off. That much I can tell you.

TRAVIS: So… is that a “no”? You won’t tell me..?

JEPH: No.

TRAVIS: (laughs) I had to try. Okay, you mentioned another of my favorite projects minute ago. You were set to produce the highly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Animated Series. What ever became of that project, and is there any hope that it will ever see the light of day?

JEPH: The simple answer is our network got sold and the new owner was not interested in the show. However, I’ve often said that the best Buffy stories are ones of resurrection, so I still believe the show will happen. (Cue: Joss mocking me!). I’m happy that I got to write one of the Buffy Season 8 stories for Dark Horse and Joss — since that was pretty much based on the Pilot that Joss and I did. So it exists in some form, anyway. And Eric Wight who did the original designs (along with Eric Radomsky) was the artist for the story (along with Georges Jeanty) so it had the look the show would’ve had.

TRAVIS: Yeah, that was an outstanding stand-alone issue – which is saying a lot, since it’s a part of a pretty fantastic series of comics.

As a successful writer of both television/movies and comic books, can you tell us a little bit about how you have to adapt your writing for each? Obviously in comics, you can share the inner thoughts of the characters via narration boxes and monologues, which you cannot accomplish as easily in the medium of television and movies. What challenges does this create?

JEPH: I don’t really think in those terms. Each project is different and I try and do the best storytelling I can. That’s where they all meet. They are stories that I’m trying to convey to the widest audience. Some are funny. Some are horrific. Romantic. Emotional. It just depends on the project. What I do know is that I’m very, very grateful for the readers and the audiences who have responded. Without them doing what they do, I couldn’t do what I do.

TRAVIS: So, we hear you’re working on a new television series DAY ONE?

JEPH: DAY ONE is created by Jesse Alexander who I worked with over at HEROES. It a spectularly huge show with great characters in the tradition of the shows we’ve both been part of like LOST. It’s set in Los Angeles around an apartment building when something startling happens. We talk about it like Melrose Place meets Independence Day. It’s wild! We’re having a blast. We just started production. It premieres in March 2010 on NBC right after the Winter Olympics. I could not be more excited.

There might even be some special announcments concerning the show at Long Beach.

TRAVIS: Hm… intriguing. Just one more reason to come to the show!

You have won four Eisner Awards for your work on several Batman projects. How did you first become involved with that franchise, and what drew you to the character?

JEPH: The quickest way to tell it would be “Tim Sale.” I had always been a Batman fan — Neal Adams is one of my favorite artists and certainly one of the most influential in terms of modern day storytelling in comics. Tim had been working with Archie Goodwin, the late great writer and editor, and Archie had asked him to tell another Batman story (he’d done a Legends of the Dark Knight with James Robinson). Tim asked Archie if I could write it since we’d done Challengers of the Unknown together. The first one was the Legends of the Dark Knight Batman Halloween Special “Fears” which I still think wins the award for the longest comic book title! I’ve had great fun and success with the character ever since.

TRAVIS: You’ve put words into the mouths of some of the most famous superheroes in the world – Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America… Do you feel limited, in any way, writing for such iconic characters with such rich back-stories, or is it actually liberating for you to have such a solid base?

JEPH: At the risk of repeating myself — I can only try and tell the best stories I can. Each character has a different voice. What I like about comics is that the icons can be told in such different ways and as long as you hold true to the iconic nature, the story has validity. My Batman is different from Grant’s, or Rucca’s or Frank Miller’s. I don’t write the Hulk the same as Peter David or Greg Pak. I have such enormous respect for anyone who works in this field and I love the differences in the styles and storytelling. It’s part of what makes comics both challenging and rewarding.

TRAVIS: Tell us a little bit about the genesis of the Marvel “color” series (Daredevil: Yellow, Hulk: Grey, etc.) that you’ve worked on with long-time collaborator Tim Sale. How did that project come about?

JEPH: Joe Quesada. Joe’s been a friend and fan of Tim’s forever and he asked us back in the days of Marvel Knights if we wanted to do a Daredevil story. Both Tim and I have a fondness for the “Year One” aspect of characters, some of that is so we don’t disturb the modern continuity and some of it is we can tell stories about the purity of that character. I like to think of it as telling the stories in between the pages of the stories you already know. The themes of centering the stories around a lost loved one was something that happened once we knew we were doing more than just Daredevil Yellow. They certainly are among my favorite things I’ve done with Tim. And yes! We’re still hard at work on Captain America: White! I promise!

TRAVIS: You’ve obviously accomplished a lot, and have collaborated with some of the biggest names in comics and beyond. What’s left – is there someone that you’re itching to work with, or a project that you would love to get your hands on?

JEPH: I still have a short list. When there’s an artist who I’ve wanted to work with (or they want to work with me) it comes down to who THEY want to draw. Part of my job is to come up with a script that gets the artist totally jazzed. It’s incredibly difficult to do what an illustrator does so I want him or her to be excited about attacking that page. And it always shows in the work. I write specifically for that artist. I wouldn’t tell the same Batman story for Jim Lee that I would for Tim Sale. But the best part, by far, is getting the artwork as it comes in. It used to be by fax so I’d wait for something in the tray in the morning. Now it’s by email and then I print it out. Just the best!

TRAVIS: Final question: What are you most looking forward to seeing/doing at the Long Beach Comic Con?

JEPH: Like with any Con, the best part is meeting the fans. I’ve had the most wonderful experiences talking with readers about the books — not only mine, but anyone else’s. I like hearing what interests people, particularly if they are reading my stuff, what else are they reading? Are they reading Geoff Johns’? I sure hope so! (Just a shout out to my Empath Magic Treehouse writing studio buddy who will also be at Long Beach!)

TRAVIS: Jeph, thank you so much!

JEPH: Thanks for all the time — See you all in Long Beach!

Here’s another round of these cool Long Beach Comic Con Artist Q&As. Today’s question is probably the most obvious one to ask a bunch of comic artist — if you could be a Superhero, which one would you choose to be? (And we’re not kidding ourselves… we know they’ve probably heard the question once or twice — or seven-hundred times – before…) But it’s always a fun question, and what’s not entirely predictable is some of the answers that we received. Check it out, below:

If you could be a comic book character, who would you be, and why?

♦ ”If I could be a comic character I would be one that hasn’t been created yet…” – Oliver Nome

♦ ”Would have to say Batman because he such a bad@$$” -Eddie Nunez

♦ ”I’m not sure I can play this game, I mean I haven’t played it in like two days or something like that and I can’t remember what I said last time…but it was like so awesome. if I could be a super-hero I would like to have been the guy I said the last time we played it in the studio…yeah that guy.” -Tone Rodriguez

♦ ”I would be Batman. He’s got it all: The cash, the car, the cave, the cape AND the utility belt.” - Jeff Stokely

♦ ”Hmm, well most of my favorite comic book characters actually have fairly horrific pasts. Like Batman, Magneto, etc. are great characters but I’m not sure I’d want their actual lives. So this is an interesting question. But if I were picking based on sheer powers alone, I’d go with Magneto. But if I were picking a lifestyle, I’d say Tony Stark.” – Livio Ramondelli

♦ ”Mr. Fixit aka The Grey Hulk.” - Carlos D’Anda

♦ ”Cannonball from the New Mutants. I always wanted to fly.” -JJ Kirby

Interesting. We’re still waiting on a few more responses for this question, and so we’ll most likely run a second round of this one… but in the meantime, what Superhero would you be? (And just for fun, let’s take Tony Stark and Batman out of the running…) What do you think?

Oh, me? You know, my gut said to go old-school and say Superman, but I’m gonna shake things up and say The Tick. Because he makes me laugh. And people need to laugh more. (Also, Long Beach Comic Con staffer Chip said he would be Namor. Why? Explains Chip, “Because I look sooooo good in a green speedo.”)

Keep your eyes on the Long Beach Comic Con website for more guest announcements and exciting news!

Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to feature lots and lots of interviews with some of the incredible comic book artists and other media guests who will be gracing us with their presence at the Long Beach Comic Con. We’ve got some BIG interviews coming up,so be sure to check back to the blog regularly.

Plus, in addition to some of the full-blown interviews, we’re going to be featuring a series of questions — some serious, and some others… well um, not — that we posed to many of our featured Long Beach guests. (And let me just say… we sincerely appreciate time out of their busy schedules for this. Because some of these questions are just… well, you’ll see.) So, here’s today’s question:

What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?

♦ ”Film director. Let me specifiy- BIG BUDGET film director (but with quality).” -Livio Ramondelli

Yesterday we talked a little bit about things to do in Long Beach, after the Convention closes itsdoors. And if you read the article and took away just one thing, I hope it’s this: Hotel mini bar cashews are extraordinarily expensive, so GO OUT AND ENJOY LONG BEACH!

Today we’re going to continue that thread, with a quick look-see at some of the fine eateries and watering-holes that you might want to visit after the Con.

Please note, the Long Beach Comic Con staff has not sampled all of these establishments, and this list is not any kind of official endorsement. (Meaning, we are not affiliated with any of these restaurants.) It’s more of an overview of what’s around, what’s yelpalicious (it’s a word!), than an official recommendation. (You know, we gotta make sure you aren’t going to blame us if you go out to eat and end up with a fly in your soup…)

Also please note, as with any major city, you have your pick of the run-of-the-mill chain restaurants and fast food joints. And those are fine. (No offense to our friends at California Pizza Kitchen or to the Hamburglar) But we’re attempting to highlight some of the local independently owned places, or at least places that are exclusive to Southern California. (You will see, there are some suggestions….) Anyway, without further ado, here’s a list of some local places to grab a bite &/or drink in Long Beach, CA

The Auld Dubliner Irish Pub – This Irish restaurant/pub claims to be Long Beach’s first of its kind, imported directly from Dublin, Ireland. They have a nice looking menu of traditional pub foods… but more importantly, claim to specialize in pouring “The Perfect Pint.” ‘Nuff said.

Check out what cutomers are saying about The Auld Dublin Irish Pub on Yelp, here!

Cohiba - This elegant establishment offers 3 separate rooms — a lounge, an entertainment venue, and a nightclub… plus, a private humidor boasting some fine cigars (if you’re into that kind of thing… and I know some of you are!) The fare includes traditional American meals — from steak and chicken to pasta and fish! Plus, private rooms are available. (Call for details!)

Some cutomer reviews of Cohiba can he found on Yelp here!

Gladstone’s – This beautiful water-front restaurant has scenic views of Rainbow Harbor and the Queen Mary! And their Long beach tourism website describes the atmosphere as fun and casual, yet sophisticated. If that doesn’t sum up your average Con-goer, nothing does! Meals range from lobster and other seafood to chicken and pasta… and a clam chowder that is listed as “award winning.” (I for one am not sure what awards I would even nominate clam chowder for… Maybe a Grammy.)

Yelp, Yelp, Yelp…

Joe Jost’s Tavern – Allegedly, Joe Jost began serving beer and food in 1934, after the end of prohibition. That’s… um… a long time ago. Since that time, they claim to have served over 4.5 million sandwiches and 14 million beers. (Let’s see if we can’t take those numbers up another couple hundred thousand, shall we?) Oh, and they’ve got pool tables. And snooker tables. Which, is like pool, I think, but on the other side of the road.

Here’s a great yelper comment: “If I didn’t know any better, I ‘d swear that there’s a secret brotherhood amongst their patrons. My clue is their T-shirts. It doesn’t matter where you are, you could be on a beach in Puerto Vallarta or walking the streets in SoHo and if you’re wearing a Joe Jost’s T-shirt, there is a high probability that someonewill walk up to you and say hello.” – Cheryl R

See more Yelp user reviews of Joe Jost’s, here!

King’s Fish House – King’s Fish House is a Southern California chain, specializing in… um, fish. But according to them, their trademarks are familiarity, simple comforts, and affordability. Oh, and they serve fish.

Check out what fish-loving-yelpers think!

Long Beach Café - This place isn’t winning any awards for the creativity of their name… but they claim to have the best breakfast in town. And frankly, I wouldn’t recommend starting a day at the con without a giant omelet and a couple of pots of coffee.

Here’s what one yelper had to say: “Bring your appetite if you eat here because it is good old American Home Cooking! I mean dinners with soup and a salad, portions as with the turkey or roast beef enough to make me need to call Jenny Craig the next day!?” – Michael P

Yelp says…

The Reef Restaurant - The Reef features a beautiful Victorian Decor and waterfront verandas overlooking the downtown Long Beach skyline. And the food ranges from steak to fresh seafood, and more. Oh, and on Sunday morning, they have a Champagne Brunch. You know, in case you’re still up from whatever you were doing Saurday night.

Want more info? Yelp can help!

Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery – Rock Bottom has 29 locations throughout the US, one of which happens to be in… you guessed it, Long Beach. They feature an impressive menu, full of standard American fare — steak, burgers, etc. Plus they have a “Mug Club.” And Breweries are always cool.

For those of you who fear to be away from the internet, you might find this tidbit yelperific: “I have to give Rock Bottom thumbs up for being savvy enough to have free WiFi in downtown LB.” – Melissa B

Sgt. Pepper’s Dueling Piano Café – Okay, this one is, for me, pretty self-explanatory. Dueling pianos people. And if that’s not your thing… well, then there’s seriously not that much more I can do for you. Check out the menu on their MySpace page — most of the dishes are named for a song or an artist… Quesadilla & the Sunshine Band! Bohemian Wrapsody! Genius!) C’mon people!

See what I am talking about? Check out this yelply: “The drinks were cheap and the place was packed! What made it an awesome night is that everyone sings and dances along. Awesome audience interaction. Good times, indeed.” – Christalle R

Wokcano Asian Restaurant & Lounge - Another Southern California chain, Wokcano just opened it’s Long Beach location in April, 2009. They boast “fresh sushi and creative maki rolls as well as modern riffs on traditional fare…” Frankly, you had me at “fresh sushi.” But if that’s not your thing, you might want to check out the Teriyaki Room. And if nothing else, check out their website for a really cool on-line menu!

Here’s a yelpful endorsement: “Listen to these magic words: “Open ’til 4am” Four o’clock in the effin’ morning. Do you really understand how amazing this is? You mean I don’t have to choose between the big salad at Shorehouse or pancakes at Denny’s next time I’m drunk? That’s exactly what they mean.” – Hazel Q

Yard House – The Yard House is a chain that has a number of locations throughout the US, but they are included here for three reasons: (1.) The talents of award-winning Chef Carlito Jocson, (2.) the al fresco dining along the waterfront patio, and (3.) they claim to have the world-largest selection of premium draft beer. But mostly, # 3.

Another yelping review: “I don’t think I’ve EVER been in here when its slow. Does Yardhouse even HAVE a slow time? Oh, wait, they have like 500 beers on tap… of course they don’t have a slow time. They have an assortment of great hefs, Wyders Cider, and Framboise Raspberry Lambic- all on tap!” Kaylah G

And of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Once again, locals please sounds off and let us know your thoughts on (a) any of the above, or (b) any others that you might recommend to out-of-towners. And everyone, download the Yelp app for your mobile device, so that YOU can weigh in on these — and any other — places you visit in Long Beach before, during and after the convention!

And now that we’ve given Long Beach it’s due, we’ll be back shortly with some more interesting insights and details specifically relating to the Long Beach Comic Con! And thanks to our friends at Yelp!

It takes a lot of work to put on a Comic Book Convention. Wait, let me rephrase that… It takes a lot of work to put on a Comic Convention that’s actually worth going to. (Technically, anyone can set up a folding table in their front yard with a couple of long boxes, invite a couple of friends over, and viola, it’s FrontyardCon 2009!) But the Long Beach Comic Con is a little more ambitious than that.

Think of the Long Beach Comic Con as a delicious casserole (mmmm… Casserole…)

To make the perfect casserole, you need lots of ingredients – and you need just the right amount of each, to attain that perfect epicurean delight. So, the ingredients for “Comic Con Casserole” would include a dash of knowledgeable and experienced staff (with a dashing, handsome blogger), a healthy dose of compelling and exciting content and panels, heap loads of special guests, and a pinch of super-deluxe, exclusive merchandise. Makes sense right? But there’s another ingredient – a secret ingredient… An ingredient that will turn your regular old everyday casserole into a unique culinary creation sure to please the most finicky foodie.

And that secret ingredient is… the venue. Oh, not just the Long Beach Convention Center – though it is a fine Convention Center, indeed! (Check out their website here!) No we’re talking about Long Beach at large – the city itself has a lot going on, and we’re hoping that Con attendees will make their most of their stay, and will check out all that Long Beach has to offer.

In future Blogs, we’re going to give you an inside look at some of the other “ingredients” that make the Long Beach Comic Con the place to be the first weekend in October. But today, let’s explore Long Beach, shall we? (And btw, from here on out, we’re dropping the stupid “casserole” analogy – you get it, right?)

So, why Long Beach? It’s one of the first questions everyone asks. What a lot of people might not realize is that Long Beach is actually the 36th largest city in the United States, and it’s the 6th largest in California. This is no podunk town – this is a booming Metropolis with plenty to offer in terms of culture, fine dining, and unique attractions.

So, after the Con, you have options. Sure, you can sit in your hotel room, raid the mini bar (yay, $26 cashews!), read some comics, play with your new Jakks Pacific exclusive Ray Mysterio, and stare lovingly at your freshly signed glossy 8×10 of Emma Caufield. OR you could save some of that until you get home (excepting the cashews, of course) and head out to see all that Long Beach has to offer. Including:

The Queen Mary – The RMS Queen Mary is an ocean liner that, between 1936 and 1967, made over 1,000 transatlantic crossings. This stunningly beautiful vessel is over 15% longer than the Titanic, and was used by Allied forces during Wold War II as a troopship. Retired in 1967, The Queen Mary was permanently moored in Long Beach, where she currently serves as a tourist attraction – including a museum, a restaurant, a spa, and even a hotel! Those adventurous Con-goers can book a room to stay aboard the Queen Mary. Visit The Queen Mary’s website for more details!

The Aquarium of the Pacific – Located on Rainbow Harbor, the Aquarium of the Pacific is situated directly across the water from the Convention Center (and incidentally, from the Queen Mary)! This beautiful aquarium features over 12,500 different animals, representing 650 different species. Exhibits include creatures from Southern California & Baja, the rigid Northern Pacific, and the colorful reefs of the Tropical Pacific. Plus, guests can get up close and personal with sharks (!) in the Aquarium’s Interactive Shark Lagoon. (This blogger, who watched too much “Shark Week” a few weeks back, may forgo the latter…) For more information, visit the official Aquarium of the Pacific website here.

Gondola Getaway – Gondonla Getaway offers unique, one-hour Gondola cruises around the canals of Naples, from 11 am- 11 pm daily, all year-round. And we’re talking old-school, Venice-style Gondolas, where the only thing powering the boat is human-power. But you don’t have to row – we KNOW you’re going to be sore and tired after all day on the convention floor – that’s all taken care of by a professional Gondolier! And best of all, they have a large fleet, with boats that can accommodate anywhere from 2-14 people! Call or visit the Gondola Getaways website here for pricing and reservations.

The Russian Submarine – Like the Queen Mary, this sub was once a fully-functional vessel. It was one of nearly eighty Foxtrot submarines developed by the Russians as a part of “Project 641,” and is widely regarded as one of the most successful class of submarines ever produced in the Soviet Navy. In 1994 it was decommissioned, and in 1998, it was moved to Long Beach, where it serves as a tourist attraction. The sub, to this day, remains 100% accurate, and appears as it would, to a Russian undersea crew. Visit the Russian Sub website here for more details.

And of course, we promised culture… So, Con visitors can visit the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), the Rancho Los Altimos Museum, or even the or the University Art Museum. For more information on any of the above attractions and much, much more, please visit the Long Beach Visitors Website!

And, if that’s not enough, look at it this way… The average October temperature in Long Beach, CA is 68 degrees. The average October temperature in both Chicago, IL and New York, NY is 55 degrees. Now tell me, where would you rather be, come October?

Of course, we haven’t even touched on the popular night-spots and the plethora of awesome eateries that Long Beach has to offer. We’ll save that for our next blog. And be sure to stay tuned to the Long Beach Comic Con blog… once we’re through giving you a nice overview of Long Beach, we’re going to start sharing a lot more Con-specific info – including behind the scenes looks at all of those other things (i.e. the guests, the panels, the exclusives) that make the Long Beach Comic Con the event of the fall.

In the meantime, if you’re a local, please feel free to sound-off on other cool things to do in Long Beach. And if you’re coming from out of town, let us know what (if anything) you’re most excited about seeing, outside of the convetions. And maybe, consider staying a few extra days after the Con, to fit it all in!

Baltimore, MD August 18, 2009 – Long Beach Comic Con is proud to announce that Comic Book Legend Stan Lee will host the ribbon cutting ceremony that will officially declare the start of the inaugural Long Beach Comic Con. The ceremony will take place Friday, October 2nd at the site of Long Beach Comic Con, the Long Beach Convention Center. Additionally, Long Beach Comic Con is offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to five lucky fans who pre-order their weekend convention passes. These five fans will be chosen at random for a private Meet and Greet event with Lee on opening day of the convention. Information is available at www.longbeachcomiccon.com.

Hero Initiative and Desert Wind Comics are also arranging for five additional individuals to attend the Meet & Greet event. Details will be available on their respective websites shortly.

Stan “The Man” Lee, whose comic book career spans over 60 years, is the mind behind the biggest names in the comic book universe. His body of work is far and away the most extensive in the history of comic books. Simply put, there is no bigger name in the world of comic books.

“I am looking forward to opening up the inaugural Long Beach Comic Con,” said Lee. “The team behind the convention really made an impact on me with their passion and desire for a great show and I am excited to be a part of it.”

“We could not have asked for a better way to ring in the start of the Long Beach Comic Con. Stan Lee is the most remarkable figure in the comic book industry and we are thrilled that he is going to be a part of our convention,” said event planner Martha Donato, President of MAD Event Management. “The five lucky winners of the private Meet and Greet event are in for quite a treat. It will certainly be an unforgettable experience for them.”

on the contract for our secret, super-special guest (no, it’s not ryan reynolds. but it is a huge name. and if i try to give ANY clues, the legal department will throw me in the dungeon and beat me severely, so don’t bother tempting me), i thought i’d ask everyone what their first comic book was.

if you are elderly and remember the mesozoic era like me, it’s probably an old dc or marvel title. or perhaps an archie, harvey or gold key (these things existed before ipods … you crazy kids, with your rock music and tweets – get off my lawn!).

mine? the original justice league of america. #90. in it, the “proof rock” that the pale people of atlantis worshipped (not making this up, folks) was destroyed by surface dwellers. in retaliation, they took over atlantis, and the jla rushed to the rescue. but 43 atlanteans died, causing aquaman to cuss out the leaguers, and hawkman teaches the pale people not to worship false gods.

it transformed me. those relevant comics of the early 70s always did. i still don’t litter ( i don’t need the sea king coming after me !), i’m skeptical about everything and i still think aquaman rocks for standing up to his colleagues.

this is what i love about comics. to my six-year-old brain, i touched something bigger than my street. there was a whole world out there (and possibly one under the ocean!)

so. i’d love to hear about other first experiences. because after all … isn’t that why we have conventions? not just to discuss who wins between aquaman and namor – but to see what effect it has on our collective reality?

or is it “oh, no … i’ve wasted my life.”

nahhhh …

Hey guys, I am back with something pretty important. A very good friend, Andrew Mangum, and comic artist is in need of a little help. Give it a read and please lend a hand if you can. No matter how small.

————————————————————————————–

Another artist needs your help! Another call to action!

As many of you may remember, I organized the big Josh Medors Benefit Auction on Ebay back in May, which was wildly successful for Josh and truly helped him cover his overwhelming medical bills. In no way do I want to be known as “the Cancer guy” when it comes to helping artists, but I find myself in a position where I need to help another artist raise some money for battle against cancer. This time it is for Andrew Mangum, my younger brother and another accomplished comic book inker/illustrator.

Mostly known for his inks, he has done covers and/or books with Josh Medors, Justiniano, Talent Caldwell, Tyler Kirkham, Scott Clark, Mark Kidwell and many more for companies like DC, Image, Frazetta, Zenescope, Arcana & Big City! He is also a full illustrator on such books as American Wasteland, Grimm Fairy Tales, Snowman: Ghost Dance, and the upcoming Blood & Bones.

The last benefit required the help of many great people, but it was Andrew, Josh’s current inker on Sorcerer at Frazetta Comics, who was basically my co-organizer He was the one who had all the connections to industry people. Then the week before the auctions started running, Andrew was stricken with debilitating pain and taken to the hospital where he was soon diagnosed with testicular cancer, called nonseminomatous, phase 2. So while we were running Josh’s Cancer Benefit, Andrew was actually having surgery to remove the cancerous growth. But the cancer had unfortunately spread to his lymph nodes, so now he is undergoing a grueling series of chemo therapy treatments over the next few months.

Thankfully Andrew has health insurance through a day job to help cover a lot of the medical costs. But because of the treatments, which have high co-payments and deductibles piling up, he can’t work his day job because he is too sick from the chemo. Even worse, he is the sole provider for his wife and kids, so the bills are piling up. Therefore, action needs to be taken, so I decided to arrange another benefit style auction series like the one we just did for Josh.
I know there are a lot of fans and friends out there that want to help, so this auction series will be that opportunity. A wide variety of artists will be contributing personal works and art from their collections just like last time, and it’s also open to collectors, fans, and everyone else as well. Anyone can donate if they want to help! We just ask that it be comic or comic art related.

Same as before, there is a special auction preview gallery on my Comic Art Fans page at:
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryRoom.asp?GSub=85567

If you are an artist or fan, we need your help! This auction series will be entirely made up of donated items and everything will help!
To donate something to the auctions, just email me at madman1138@yahoo.com or through my CAF with a scan or photo of the piece and the item information and I will send you the mailing address to send the goods to. I only ask the items be shipped to me in advance because there will be a lot to organize and package, and simplicity & reliability dictates that only one location handle it all. All donations must be RECEIVED no later than Friday, September 4th, 2009 in order to be included in the auctions, which will start listing to Ebay on Saturday September 5th.

Because so many people have been asking about just sending monetary donations directly to Andrew as well, his Paypal email address for that is: admangum@msn.com

Sending $5 or $10 might not seem like much, but remember the water drops principle. A drop of water isn’t much, but enough drops eventually fill the bucket. Every bit counts here and time is of the essence. Now is the time to act!

Lastly, please only use his email address for Paypal payments and don’t deluge his inbox with questions and well wishes. Although appreciated, he won’t be able to reply to them.

So please help if you can and be sure to take a look at the auctions on Ebay when they start the first weekend of September, and maybe throw down a bid or two. The cause is noble, the art and selection is great, and together we can make a difference!

Sincerely,
Dave Kopecki

Mike Scigliano: Dustin, it’s great to have you out for the first annual Long Beach Comic Con this October. With show being held in your home town how do you feel about having a comic book show back in Long Beach?

Dustin Nguyen: It’s great. I feel a city as diverse as Long Beach has talents just as diverse. It will be sweet!

Mike: Since you’re a local, are there any places around the convention center that the attendees should hit up for a meal or to hang out after the show wraps each day?

Dustin: Totally. Right across the street, on Ocean, is lined with great places to eat. There are also some bars like Smoothies and Cohiba. I think on the weekends, Maitai, near shoreline (its close to the pier), is pretty nice. If you just want smaller pubs and a nice place to walk around and take in the city, 2nd Street is a few minutes away. I used to live over on Naples Island and we have Naples Rib Company, a great place to get some steaks. Seriously, what I love about the idea of having a show in Long Beach is that it feels almost like a small SDCC, location wise and even weather wise.

Mike: Nice, that’s quite a list of places to check out. Now that we have covered before and after the doors close, let’s talk about the show itself. What do you look forward to most about a comic show?

Dustin: You. Haha

Mike: Well that goes without saying. But other than me…

Dustin: Oh, you were serious…

I’m looking forward to a great show, man. A lot of the guests are local creators that I actually know and they’re all really awesome. Besides that, I’m just very excited to see the potential of another great west coast show.

Mike: Well we are very humbled by all of the support the local creative community is heaping on the show. It really gets us going to make this the best show it can be.

Dustin: It’d better be… haha.

Mike: We are definitely working hard on it. So before we wrap this up and I let you get back to penciling Batman: Streets of Gotham for DC comics (See Dustin, I told you I’d get your shameless plug in there…) –

Dustin: “IN STORES NOW!”

Mike: Right… Anyway, why don’t you lay one of your favorite comic show stories on us.

Dustin: Hmmm, that’s tough. I’ll go with the safe one that puts me as the offender.

Mike: Heh. Ok, so let’s have it….

Dustin: I was at my first NYCC a few years ago set up in Artist Alley having a great time doing sketches and signing comics. I said congrats to a young lady once, on her expecting. She wasn’t expecting. :-(

Mike: Ouch.

Dustin: It was in NY in the freezing cold and she just had on a really thick coat. The minute the last word came out my mouth, I already heard my inner voice say “WTF, Dustin?” She was nice about it, and said, “No. But I’m never wearing this coat again.” Then she threw all my books back in my face.

Mike: Good job. Well, there should be no big puffy coats in Long Beach is so perfect for you.

Dustin: Yeah.

Mike: Dustin, I can’t thank you enough for taking time out to chat with me. We’ll check back in with you as the show gets closer so you can let everyone know what you will have in store for the attendees! Any last words?

Dustin: For now: BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM!

Mike: Heh, thanks Dustin!

Dustin: Thanks Mike, see you in October!

By Jerry Amsterdam

Its not the San Diego Comic Con but its The Long Beach Comic Con. That’s right! Your reading this correctly. A new convention has been birthed and its only a few cities north from San Diego.

The Long Beach Comic Con is scheduled for an October 2nd-4th run at the Long Beach Convention Center, which will give exhibitors and fans a whopping 244,000 sq. ft to play with. That is almost half the size of the exhibit floor of the San Diego Convention Center. This is a huge amount of space for a first time convention, which is a great sign that bodes well for attendees.

The Inaugural opening for this convention is one that is welcomed by many enthusiast alike. WithSDCC reaching astronomical numbers in attendance, having the LBCC is the perfect complement. Think of the SDCC as the main course meal and the LBCC as dessert! That’s a great combination.

J: Congratulations on undertaking the launch of the Long Beach Comic Con! This is an epic task which I commend you.

Martha: Thank you for the kind words.

J: What I’m wondering now is how this all came about. Can you tell us why you felt the need for the LBCC?

Martha: The inspiration for bringing the LBCC was the friendships, business relationships and fans I have met over the years. After leaving the industry for a spell, I looked forward to rejoining the community and thought that pulling the LBCC would be a great way to do it.

J: Way to make a comeback into the community by throwing an event! Obviously its something that your very passionate about. Can you share your vision and some goals for this convention?

Martha: The vision for the LBCC is to create an event that fans, creators and exhibitors alike can enjoy and share their love of comics and pop culture. We want to generate some excitement and get people together to celebrate their hobby in a fantastic environment. The long term goal for LBCC is to create a sustainable and long-lasting model that invites creators to showcase their talents before an interested and friendly audience for years to come.

J: Seems like you have a core fundamental idea of what people are looking for in a convention.

Martha: If there is anything I learned throughout the years about conventions is that you need substance and depth in your guest list, your exhibitor base, and in your programming rotations. People expect more for their admission dollars, and we believe we can deliver a great experience.

J: Speaking of experience, lets talk about the mania of the SDCC. The explosion of SDCC has been tremendous over the past years and has become an outlet for Hollywood to promote. What can you tell us about the main focus for this convention? Will it be more geared towards Hollywood or more on comics? Will it be balanced and if so, how?

Martha: Our team has all been faithful attendees of SDCC for many, many years and we respect and admire the show and its staff, it is a remarkable experience. Keep in mind It took them many years to get to the level of support they enjoy now from the studios, and there’s really no short-cut to getting Hollywood’s attention. We feel grateful to have a measure of support from Lions Gate, and hope that the timing of the show will allow for some additional studio interest, but we’re not building the show around that premise.

J: Can you reveal anything as far as special guest that will be attending LBCC? Seems fitting that some celebs would attend since it so close to Hollywood, any word?

Martha: That’s still a work in progress…

J: A big part of conventions are exclusive. What can we expect and who are the big players in this?

Martha: Exclusives have definitely been an important element in comic book shows over the last several years. We are working on a couple of exciting projects, including an exclusive comic book cover on a Marvel comic and an action figure. Stay tuned for more details.

J: Any chance of this event needing volunteers? If so, who do they need to contact?

Martha: Yes, we would love to have volunteers help us run the show. In fact, we’ll be posting a volunteer registration form on our website www.longbeachcomiccon.com next week.

J: With your years of experience in attending conventions, what is your number one advice for convention attendees?

Martha: My number one piece of advice for convention attendees is to enjoy all that the show has to offer and experience things that are both new and old. Enjoying the celebration of one’s hobby can also be a learning experience and can lead to new friendships.

J: I’m excited for the LBCC and can’t wait for it to come. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to enlighten the masses about the LBCC!

Martha: The pleasure was all mine!

You can find out more about the Long Beach Comic Con, Martha Donato and the rest of the gang by visiting www.longbeachcomiccon.com

so we have a cool show in the planning stages. and we need your help.

what do YOU want at the show?

(yes, i want ryan reynolds and scarlett johansson, too. if i had their cell numbers or Facebook accounts, i’d already be talking to them!)

no, what do you want out of the show itself? months of research (and a long layover at jfk) leads me to break things down into 5 or 6 categories:
1) new products/previews (toys, film, bionic body parts)
2) guests (see above for my wish list)
3) panels (not the same as guests, really, in my mind – behind-the-scenes stuff, how-to’s …)
4) nostalgia/shopping (it was a happy day when i finally found the SHAZAM #14 100-page Super Spectacular!)
5) events (awards ceremonies, dances, photo-ops, contests)
6) exclusives (toys, books, sculptures, alien artifacts)

so, here’s what i’d like you to do. let me know. you can comment here, that’s great for raising our Google profile, and it sparks discussion. so do that.

BUT …
you can also email me.

ccarter@longbeachcomiccon.com

i promise to read each one.
i promise to take them seriously (within limits! we don’t have the money to get the Pope here, people)
i promise to collect your email addresses in databases and send you funny youtube videos (i’m kidding about the youtube videos)

and if someone sends me ryan and scarlett’s emails, i promise to let them know them which of their trusted inner circle gave me their contact info.

the ball’s in your court. help me to help you make the best comic convention ever.

be good and love comics more!
